LG Display (Korea) has just introduced the prototype for the first stretchable screen on the market. world, capable of expanding the size up to 50% while maintaining image quality.
This type of stretchable display promises to open a new era for user interfaces as it can “freely transform into any shape” without being damaged.
The prototype features a 12-inch display that can be stretched to 18 inches while still maintaining a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full RGB color display.
RGB is the English abbreviation for the color system that combines the three colors red, green and blue. These are the three primary colors in the additive light color model.
Each of these colors represents a value from 0 to 255, with 0 being no color and 255 being the brightest color. When these three colors are combined, they create over 16 million different colors, allowing for the display of images and video colorful
This isn't the first time LG Display has experimented with creating stretchable displays. In 2022, LG Display unveiled a prototype with a maximum stretch ratio of just 20%.
According to LG Display, with the use of ultra-small micro-LED technology (up to 40 micrometers), durability has been significantly upgraded, helping the screen withstand more than 10.000 stretches without affecting quality.
Unlike current flexible displays that can only bend or fold, this display can actually transform, twist, and stretch into a variety of shapes. This opens up the potential for a wide range of innovative applications in many different fields.
The project is part of a national program led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea, launched in 2020. LG Display leads a consortium of research institutes participating in the project.
Compared to the previous version, which was released in 2022, the new version has the ability to expand by 20-50%. LG Display has demonstrated several applications of the display, including a curved display for cars that can be controlled by touch gestures and a display that can be worn on firefighters' uniforms to provide real-time information.
In addition to being exceptionally stretchable, these displays are thin, light, and can adhere to curved surfaces, such as clothing or skin.
Although still in the development stage, this display is expected to be a remarkable technology. LG Display hopes to soon apply this technology to specific fields that require flexible screens that can adapt to many different shapes and sizes.
According to LG Display, this technology will create many breakthroughs in areas such as fashion, smart wearables and mobile devices./.
