The Lenovo Yoga Solar PC Concept is a laptop with an integrated solar panel, marking the return of this idea after nearly 15 years due to limitations related to previous photovoltaic cells.
Solar panel integrated into the lid of the Yoga Solar PC Concept
The Yoga Solar PC Concept weighs 1.18 kg and is less than 15.3 mm thick, with dimensions comparable to a standard 14-inch laptop. The product design is not much different from Lenovo's traditional Yoga line, although it still retains impressive specifications such as an OLED display, up to 32 GB of RAM, a 50.2 WHr battery, and a 2 MP IR webcam with Windows Hello support.
The Power of Solar Conversion on the Lenovo Yoga Solar PC Concept
The highlight of the Yoga Solar PC Concept is the solar cells integrated into the lid. Lenovo says the panels use Back Contact Cell technology, which allows for a solar energy conversion efficiency of up to 24%. This is comparable to the efficiency of many high-end home solar systems. Furthermore, the Yoga Solar PC is equipped with Dynamic Solar Tracking, which automatically adjusts the settings of the cells to maximize the amount of energy collected.
According to Lenovo, the Yoga Solar PC Concept can generate enough energy to play 1 hour of video after just 20 minutes in the sun. Notably, even when indoors, the device is still capable of collecting energy from a light level of only 0.3 watts to charge the battery. To make it easier for users to track the amount of energy collected, Lenovo has developed a separate application.
While the Yoga Solar PC Concept is a promising idea, Lenovo has no plans to turn it into a commercial product at this time. However, based on our experience at MWC 2025, the chassis is sturdy and durable, not much different in technology from existing laptops on the market. The PV cells are protected by a layer of glass (or possibly plastic, Lenovo has not confirmed), which gives it a unique look.
One of the biggest barriers to developing solar-powered laptops is convenience. Many people may find it easier and more flexible to use a standalone solar array than to integrate it directly into the device. Regardless, the Lenovo Yoga Solar PC is a promising idea that promises a better future for laptops.
