Information security in digital transformation

According to experts, digital transformation in our country is facing many challenges related to information security. Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (Ministry of Public Security) said that in 2023, the whole country had 14.000 ransomware attacks (malware that encrypts files or prevents users from using computers until a ransom is paid) detected with about 83.000 computers and servers infected with ransomware, an increase of 8,4% compared to 2022.

According to BKAV statistics, in 2023, Vietnam will have 280.000 computers in agencies and organizations infected with APT malware (an increase of 55% compared to 2022). Most forms of cyber attacks on world have appeared in Vietnam. In the first six months of 2024, the authorities detected and handled 211.000 cyber attack warnings and 20 particularly serious cyber attack incidents.

The most prominent activity is data encryption attacks, demanding ransoms targeting corporations, financial, energy, and telecommunications enterprises, causing disruptions in management and operations, causing great economic and reputational damage. In addition, authorities discovered 201.903 data packages leaked and leaked online due to malware attacks with about 12,3 million lines of information and stolen data...

Deputy Head of Information System Security Department (Information Security Department, Ministry of Information and Communications) Pham Tuan An said that the reason for the disclosure and leakage of personal information and personal data is that many agencies, organizations and businesses currently collect a lot of information but do not have a protection mechanism or illegally share it with third parties; disclosure and leakage from data management staff; low awareness of protecting personal information and personal data. Systems that collect, process and store user information but do not ensure safety lead to attacks and exploitation.

According to the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, the buying and selling of citizen and internet user data in the world and Vietnam is becoming increasingly complicated in terms of the number of cases and the amount of leaked information. Hacker groups' attacks on network systems are carried out professionally, with techniques deployed closely, disguised for each other, and many techniques used to mislead information security departments.

Digital transformation is the process of integrating digital technology into all areas of life, economy and society, fundamentally changing the way we live, work and interact. It is necessary for organizations, agencies, businesses and individuals to always be aware of and have solutions to protect information security.

According to Mr. Phan Van Ba, Deputy Head of Representative Office of the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) Southwestern region, in recent years, Agribank has focused on researching and developing the "Strategic project for information technology development for the period 2022-2026, with a vision to 2030", prioritizing investment in technology projects to strengthen the server system and information technology infrastructure, upgrade infrastructure of data centers, network systems, enhance security, ensure that systems always operate stably and safely; develop application systems to serve management and operation requirements and develop new products and services, new distribution channels...

Mr. Le Cong Trung, in charge of network security at Telecommunications Corporation MobiFone, believes that, in addition to traditional solutions such as not installing malware, limiting access to unsecured wifi, strange websites..., telecommunications networks need solutions to protect digital space, protect users' terminal devices; have solutions to train users on artificial intelligence (AI) platforms...

Notably, due to the constant changes in information and techniques, organizations must regularly update their technology to prevent and detect in a timely manner. During production and business operations, organizations need to strictly protect customer data and ensure that customers are always protected to have the best service experience.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Anh, Department of National Information Network Security Protection (Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention), for server systems, an important location that cyber criminals often target, it is necessary to focus on protecting the operating system platform with solutions such as installing anti-malware applications for servers. Setting up a soft firewall to screen, detect, and prevent malicious connections early. Configuring hierarchy and decentralizing administrative rights to each user.

For data, which is considered the "heart" of a unit, organization, or individual, it is necessary to periodically back up data. Do not connect the computer or backup device to the device that is storing data; backup data needs to be encrypted and preserved, stored in a safe place...

For internet users, it is necessary to set up a strong account password; set up necessary privacy for the account; pay attention to login notifications, security warnings; set up prevention, note when using some dangerous permissions that affect personal information including: Contacts, access to files, images, video, microphone, positioning...

When encountering an incident in cyberspace, users need to report and contact the competent authorities; change passwords and lock compromised accounts; check devices and software to detect potential threats or temporarily disconnect the network; back up and protect important data, and copy and photocopy all information, images, and data related to the incident...
