According to CNET , rumors that the Nintendo Switch 2 will allow users to use the Joy-Con controller as a real computer mouse seem to have been confirmed, through two recently published patents.
Will the new Joy-Con controller be more versatile?
These patents, filed in Japan since August 2023, contain detailed drawings of the Switch 2 and Joy-Con, including an image of the Joy-Con being used as a 'novel' input device, with the inside facing down on a table and fingers resting on the buttons.
Patent Reveals New Joy-Con Features
The patent description also mentions the use of light sensors on the inside of the Joy-Con, similar to how modern optical mice work. In particular, there are images showing users using two Joy-Cons as two mice at once, or combining a traditional Joy-Con with a mouse-like Joy-Con.
This unique control feature can bring new experiences to strategy games, MOBAs, and even creative games with Nintendo's signature.
Additionally, the second patent reveals:
- Magnetic connection: Joy-Con will connect to Switch 2 via magnets, instead of the current sliding mechanism.
- Separate charging dock: Switch 2 will likely come with a separate charging dock for Joy-Con, supporting wireless charging.
Information from this patent makes fans even more excited to wait for the Nintendo Direct event on April 2, where Nintendo is expected to officially announce the Switch 2.
