According to TechRadar , imagine a future where your laptop charges itself as you type, electric cars charge from the motion of their wheels, or skyscrapers generate electricity from the wind. It may sound like science fiction, but this could become a reality thanks to a new material developed by scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI – USA).

New materials open up the future of the energy industry
The material, a thin polymer film containing a lead-free compound called perovskite chalcogenide, is capable of generating electricity when subjected to pressure or vibration, a phenomenon known as the piezoelectric effect. What makes it unique is that it is environmentally friendly and can be easily integrated into a variety of devices.
In tests, the material generated enough electricity to light up an array of LEDs with simple movements such as walking, running, clapping or typing. “We are very excited and encouraged by these findings,” said Dr. Nikhil Koratkar, lead author of the study.
The potential applications for this material are vast. It could be incorporated into laptop keyboards, shoe soles, car tires, or even the structure of buildings to generate energy from everyday activities.
“Our goal is to create a material that is lead-free and can be produced cheaply using elements commonly found in nature,” Koratkar added.
This breakthrough opens up huge prospects for the development of green and sustainable energy sources, contributing to mitigating the impacts of climate change.
